Achieving mental silence is not an exercise in intellectual gymnastics nor a superficial relaxation technique; it is a surgical operation of the soul. Under the doctrine of the Venerable Master Samael Aun Weor and the teachings of Christ, mental silence is the natural state of the Essence, but it is held hostage by the legion of “I’s” (Egos) that we carry inside.
The Nature of Noise: The Ego as a Legion
To understand silence, we must first understand what noise is. Master Samael explains in Revolutionary Psychology that the human being is a multiplicity of individuals. We do not have a single mind, but rather thousands of “little minds” or I’s-Egos.
- The Battle of Antitheses: The mind is a battlefield. One “I” wants to meditate, another is hungry, another remembers an insult from ten years ago. As long as the “I” exists, there will be duality; and as long as there is duality, there will be conflict and noise.
- False Quietude: The Master warns against “forced quietude.” Trying to silence the mind through the will of the Ego is like trying to put out a fire with gasoline. It is one “I” trying to dominate other “I’s.” True silence is not actively sought; it appears when the cause of the noise is eliminated.
The Indissoluble Bond: Death of the Ego and Silence
Gnosis teaches us that the mind is a vehicle that should be at the service of the Spirit, but today it is the den of the Beast. Permanent silence is impossible without Mystical Death.
“The silence of the mind is only possible when the ‘I’, the ‘Myself’, the ‘Oneself’ has been dissolved.” — V.M. Samael Aun Weor, The Revolution of the Dialectic
Why is death the only path?
- The Ego is the substance of the past: Thought is always memory. If you are thinking, you are in the past. Silence is the Eternal Now.
- Identification: We live identified with forms, problems, and desires. The death of the Ego breaks the threads of identification, allowing the Consciousness to detach from the mental machinery.
- Creative Comprehension: It is not enough to repress a thought. One must understand the “I” that originates it (the “I” of lust, the “I” of pride, the “I” of fear). Once it is fully comprehended at all levels of the subconscious, the Divine Mother Kundalini is asked for its disintegration. Without death, silence is only a temporary truce.
The Illuminating Void and the Gnosis of Jesus
The beloved Master Jesus, in his secret teachings (as glimpsed in the Gospel of Thomas and the Pistis Sophia), alluded to the state of “poverty of spirit.” To be “poor in spirit” is to be empty of the Ego, empty of concepts, empty of “myself.”
- The Void is not Nothingness: In the Gnosis of the Great White Lodge, the Illuminating Void is absolute fullness. It is the state where the Intimate Christ can express Himself.
- Transfiguration: For the Logos (the Word) to resonate, the temple (the mind) must be in silence. Jesus expelled the merchants from the temple; those merchants are the “I’s” that trade with our energies and thoughts.
Technique and Praxis: Towards Inner Quietude
To reach profound silence, the Great White Lodge suggests three fundamental steps in Gnostic meditation:
- Psychological Self-Observation: Watch the mind from moment to moment. If a thought arises, do not judge it; simply observe which “I” it comes from.
- Super-Substantial Analysis: In meditation, take that thought or emotion and dissect it. What does it want? Why does it manifest?
- Prayer in the Heart: Appeal to the Divine Mother (Ram-Io). Silence is not an achievement of the intellect; it is a grace that occurs when the Mother disintegrates the egoic structure that caused the noise.
